If you have applied for Indian Railways Recruitment 2016 and looking for RRB Syllabus for Computer Based Test, then you are on the right page. Not only the RRB syllabus. you will also find the Exam Pattern, Selection Process and the Books for the Railway Exams.
Being very much popular, Railway RRB Exams, are also competitive, as lakh of candidates every year apply for Jobs in Railways, but only a few Hundreds or thousands makes its to selection list. If you previously applied and appeared for RRB Exam, then you know, that Railways had not defined its syllabus in details and such as aspirant have no idea, about the contents of the Syllabus.
In this post, we will discuss the RRB Exam syllabus in detail, so that before the exam, you will know, what type of Questions to be asked in the exam, the difficulty level and Exam patter. It is worth mentioning here that RRB Syllabus is some what similar to SSC CGL syllabus.
So, if you have previously appeared in CGL Exams, are going to appear for CGL 2016 Exam, then it will help your in your preparation for Railway Exams too.
The only difference between the RRB Syllabus and CGL syllabus is difference of weighatge to various sections and Exam Duration. Moreover, there is negative marking of 0.33 marks in Railways Exam, as against 0.25 marks in CGL Exam for every wrong Question

Syllabus for RRB Common Computer Based Test
RRB had advertised various posts including Assistant Station Master, Good Guard , Sr. Clerk, Traffic Apprentice etc . The syllabus for all these posts at Stage -1 of exam is same. Means, irrespective of any post you applied, you have to appear for Common Computer Based test.
Before we look into the Syllabus section, Here is the Selection process for various posts
(I) For Assistant station Master and Traffic Assistant
- Stage-1 : Computer Based Test
- Stage-2: Aptitude test
- Stage-3: Document Verification
1) Computer Based test (CBT) is a Common test for all the posts.
2) Those who qualify the CBT, will be be called for the aptitude test
3) Final Merit: The Final Merit comprises of candidates performance in bth CBT & Aptitude test taken together. While the weighatge for CBT is 70% and 30% for Aptitude test.
The Shortlisted candidates based on Merit will be called for Document Verification.
(II) For Sr. Clerk cum Typist, Sr. Time Keeper, Jr. Accounts Assistant cum typist
- Stage-1 : Computer Based Test
- Stage-2: Typing Test
- Stage-3: Document Verification
Note: For All the remaining posts, there is Single Computer Based test and followed by Document Verification
Syllabus for Common Computers Based test
All those who apply for Railways Exams will have to appear for a Common Computer Based Online test, that is scheduled in the month of March to May, 2016
Here is the Syllabus of the Computer Based test
1) General Awareness
2) General Intelligence and Reasoning
3) Airthmatic Ability
The Combined weighatge (Total Marks) of all the three sections is 100 Marks and Exam Duration is 90 Minutes
No-Sectional Cut off: Unlike, Bank Exam, there is no sectional cut off in the Railway Exam. This means only aggregate marks, will be considered for shortlisting.
Negative Marks: For Every wrong question, you attempt, 0.33 marks will be deducted. So be very careful while marking answers.
General Awareness : In this section of syllabus, Questions will be asked on
- Static GK
- Indian Polity
- Capitals and Currencies
- Books and Authors
- Current events of National and International Importance
- Committees, Places and Persons in News
- Heads of Important Offices of India and World
- National and International Organizations
- Important Days
- Books and Authors
General Intelligence and Reasoning: This section will test your Intelligence and Problem Solving capabilities. Questions in this section comprises of
- Questions on Figures
- Numerical Series, Alphabetic Series
- Problem Solving
- Blood Relations
- Statement Assumptions and Conclusions
- Coding Decoding etc
Arithmetic Ability : This section will check your Quantitative Aptitude Or Mathematics section. Questions in this sections will be upto 10th level.

- Ration and Proportion
- Time and Distance
